Benefits of the new Infrastructure bill.
Officially called the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
On roads and bridges, $110 billion will be spent on surface repairs, construction and funding for major projects. Under this portion, the bill also establishes the first-ever Safe Streets and Roads for All program to support projects to reduce traffic fatalities.
For motorcyclists, the bill reauthorizes the Recreational Trails Program that serves as a critical funding mechanism for motorized and non-motorized trails using a portion of the federal gas tax paid by off-highway vehicles.
The bill also reauthorizes the Motorcyclist Advisory Council for another six years. The MAC advises the U.S. Department of Transportation on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists. This legislation increases the MAC’s membership to include more motorcyclist voices. It also requires more rounds of recommendations from the Council and responses from U.S. DOT in order to allow the MAC to delve deeper into the issues raised by previous iterations of the Council.
Also, the Build Back Better Act as it passed the House triples the electric motorcycle tax credit. Currently the credit is good for 10% of the cost of the bike up to $2,500. The bill triples that to 30% up to $7,500 for new electric motorcycles with a battery capacity of at least 2.5 Kilowatt hours. The bill is currently in the Senate with an uncertain future there.
